I am trying to transfer my bookmarks from one computer to another, which already has some of them. I have tried "delete all bookmarks except backups" from FF safe mode and then importing the HTML file, but while all the bookmarks from the file are there, this does not populate the bookmarks toolbar, which is the most important part of the structure for me. The correct toolbar is in the list of bookmarks, but it doesn't come up when I open FF. I tried deleting the stuff in the bookmark toolbar that is at the top of the list and copying the stuff in the toolbar that I want to the now-empty toolbar, but that did't work either. Thank God and the developers for Restore!

I hope this is clear enough. thanks for any help Schro

Thanks, cor-el. It did indeed work, but it's a whole lot more difficult than the last time I transferred bookmarks (can't remember how many FF versions ago that was, but it was several) -- at that time I just emailed the bookmarks.html file from one computer to me at the other and then replaced the file in the second computer with the one from the first. But at that time the second computer was a new one and had no bookmarks to start with.

It sounded so much easier to do it from the import/export function... Oh well, all's well that ends well, so everything's okay now. Sorry I took so long in responding, had to get into my other computer last night and didn't have time to work on this one until this afternoon.

thanks again for your help.

You may have two Bookmarks Toolbar folder.
One the correct working Bookmarks Toolbar folder and another with the same name as a regular folder.

The correct Bookmarks Toolbar folder should have a special icon and not the generic folder icon.

If you do have a Bookmarks Toolbar with a generic icon then move the bookmarks from that folder to the correct Bookmarks Toolbar folder (one of the three folders in the All Bookmarks folder).

You can also verify that the Bookmarks Toolbar items are still located on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

If the menu bar is hidden then press the F10 key or hold down the Alt key to make the menu bar appear.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"

  • Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
  • Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up

Importing a bookmarks.html should work and place the bookmarks from the Bookmarks Toolbar folder in the correct folder.
If that didn't happen in your case can mean that there is a problem with the places.sqlite database.

You can try to check and repair the places database with this extension:
