I have tried updating to FF 14 two times, and every time I do, FF won't open at all. I'm back running 13 with no problems, but as soon as I update to 14, I have to uninstall FF and reinstall 13 and not update. But I need to update, most of my add-ons aren't compatible with 13, they say and I don't want to be vulnerable to any security problems.

It can't be my profile because it works fine with 13. I turned off my security systems and it still won't open.

Any help????

Shirley

This is from Prevx forum:

"Prevx SafeOnline is end-of-life software that hasn't worked with Firefox since version 3. If you want the browser protection that SafeOnline was meant to provide, you will need to ask to be migrated across to Webroot Secure Anywhere, always assuming that you have a license for Prevx anti-malware + SafeOnline and not just SafeOnline on its own. If you've only got a license for SafeOnline you will have to try and come to some arrangement with Webroot to see if they will offer a discount on WSA."

If you hold down the shift key while starting Firefox, the safe mode window does not open ?

Disable Microsoft Essentials, Previx and Windows Firewall for a while and check it again.

I don't have 14 installed right now, but will do that. But even if I get the safe mode box up to start safe mode, it won't let me in because I have gotten that with 14 before. But I'll troubleshoot that today, too. Have to install it again.

That's one of the first things I did, but will try it again. They run with 13, though, which is mind boggling.

I have an appointment but will do that when I get back and reinstall 14 and see if I can get it to come up in safe mode and let you know.

Thanks! Shirley

Shirley, have you tried leaving then non working browser window open and then going to the ff tasks (clicking on the start button) and click on "Open new window" yet? I used ff for a couple of months by doing that. Every day I opened up ff and just minimized it and left it by itself on the task bar and opened up a fresh ff browser. I had to minimize the first one before it froze or I couldn't close it without using the task mgr. Also, are you making sure you shut down the computer completely and then start it? Don't just do restart so nothing gets "remembered" by the computer.

Sylvia, the browser doesn't open, that's my problem, so can't bring it up. Thanks

Ideato,

Okay, this morning I disabled my firewall, didn't let mse start up and the only thing I could figure out to do with prevx was tell it to stop monitoring and I uninstalled 13 and installed FF14 and it did the same thing, just when it tried to open it, it said "not responding" and then nothing.

So I immediately uninstalled it and installed FF13 and flawlessly it installed and I'm in it now. Crazy, huh?

Try download and install a fresh copy of 14.0.1 from :

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/14.0.1/win32/

thanks

I'm sorry, these are a list of win32 files. I'm not sure which to download. A little confused. Thx.

Never mind, I went into the en-US and will download the 14.01 file from there. Sorry.

Downloaded the file you told me to, uninstalled FF13 and installed FF14 and all it did was do the same thing, won't open, but running in task manager. I did a shift while clicking the FF14 and the safe mode box came up, but it started to fade and say "not responding."

I uninstalled and am running FF13 again.  :(

Hi Shirley,

It is probably Prevx causing your problems.

The initial advice in the first reply post from ideato was probably good. Other users have had similar problems and solved them. You could at least temporarily uninstall Prevx and try again.

Others have solved problems with Firefox and Prevx by changing Prevx settings

firefox failed today and will not reinstall nor run in any way /questions/932564#answer-356639
Put Prevx into install mode and then upgrade, it works fine

Also see /questions/932572#answer-359654

P.S. Note also Firefox 15 will be Released any day now, trying to stay on an unsupported Firefox 13 is not a good idea.

Nope, I don't have Prevx and have had pretty much same experiences as Shirley.

Hi JanneteDavie,

Often it is security software that causes problems after an upgrade. Another difficulty is sometimes trying to discover whether Firefox is being blocked, crashing or hanging.

Whatever your problem feel free to read the information in this thread, and the linked articles; but if you are unable to solve the problem please post your own thread by following using the link /questions/new and following the links and prompts that provides. Try to give the full information that is asked in that process it does assist us in helping to find solutions.

Ideato or John99, I put Prevx in "install mode" and I got FF14 installed. Now what? I can't use Prevx?? Any thoughts?

more options

The first thing to try may be to take Prevx out of install mode. I do not know anything about that software but maybe you put it in install mode when installing other new software, then take it out of that mode once it is installed.

If that does not work then because you have narrowed it down to prevx being the problem then maybe their support site will be able to help
(I included a thread link in an earlier post )

You may of course then need to repeat the action for Firerfox 15 which is now released.

PLEASE USE LINK

I did note from other comments that you have Thunderbird and Kapersky Kaspersky software installed, and that you have had problems prior to this, if you need help please start your own thread (and comment in this thread if you do decide to do that so we may look for the question)

Hi, I uninstalled Prevx and downloaded a fresh one and before I installed it, I updated my FF to 15 and it ran fine. I then reinstalled Prevx and let it go through learning my computer and even went so far as to put FF in the exception box and FF15 runs fine, but if I close it out and Prevx is up, it won't come up. If I bring Prevx down and then bring FF up, then it will let me use it.

I really like Prevx, but it's odd that it wasn't an issue with FF 13, nor is it an issue with my laptop and I have both installed there. Crazy. I will check with Prevx. I would think if Mozilla knows it's a problem, they might fix the problem. At this point, we really don't know whether it's Mozilla or Prevx, but I'm about to get shuffled back and forth, I bet.  :)

Thank you very much for the help. At least I have a workaround for it until I can get it totally fixed.  :)
