I've lost the search box which used to appear central screen below Google's logo.

I reset Firefox because it was running slowly & I was getting an awful lot of 'not responding' messages. It was a pain to get it back to the way it was. I use Google as my home screen. I have lost the big search box which used to appear centre screen below the Google logo. Instead, I have the Google search box on the same line as the URL. It is very small &, as I have poor eye sight, difficult to use.

Try to reset your homepage to the default

Note you can go to the default home page by keying into the address bar about:home (include the colon:) and clicking the green arrow.

I wonder if you may have set some odd Google page as your homepage. (I note your system details list Google Update) maybe you even use the old unsupported Googletoolbar.

Running slow and having search problems could be due to malware, but lets leave that until we try the more likely solutions.

It may certainly be worth you trying troubleshooting by comparing how Firefox works when in Safe Mode, and after you disable all your plugins.

You can set the home page the the build-in about:home or you can set the home page to the http://www.google.com website to get a Google search bar.

Use this extension to adjust the font size for the user interface:

You can use the NoSquint extension to set font size (text/page zoom) and text color on web pages.

Oddly enough the mid screen search box came back overnight after being missing for about a week. I also quite like the 'about:home' which I didn't know about as well. Firefox has been faster enough since I reset but I'll follow up the Safe Mode suggestion if things change. Thank-you for your help.

My virus checker won't allow me to install the first add-on you suggested but it did allow the second. I've installed that. It is good not to have to keep using Ctrl+ to increase the font size & alspo change the text colour to black. I can't understand this preference for very pale fonts (as on this site!) all the time. Many thanks.
