The box on the top might be the standard search box that usually appears on the far right end of the Navigation Toolbar. To move something off your toolbar area, try the Customize feature.

Alt+v (opens the classic View menu) > Toolbars > Customize

You should be able to drag and drop between the toolbars and the Customize dialog. Does that work?

Of course, this doesn't answer the question of why the search page isn't working. Is it the built-in Firefox home page (about:home) or is it on a Google site?

Actually... I think the "Search Here" box is from an add-on. Try disabling all unrecognized and/or nonessential extensions on this tab:

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions category

Past thread on this box/bar: firefox added a "search bar" as a tab. I don't want it. How do I get rid of it?

If you have the Default Tab extension then uninstall it.

The "New" Google search box appears right in the same line as the tabs, and it is not affected by anything in the "View" menu. In fact it doesn't appear anywhere in any menu. I want it gone and I want it gone badly. I don't like Google.

It's not a tab so you can't uninstall it and it isn't an extension or an add-on either. I am not a novice user, I've used Firefox since it's creation. If I can't do it on my own, it's going to be a real mother to get rid of.

Hi AllnightVi, can you review what you've tried:

  • Dragging it off the tab bar using the customize feature?
  • Disabling all nonessential, recent, and unrecognized extensions?

If the cause is gone but the symptom lingers, you could try flushing all toolbar-area customizations.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

Switch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old

Restart Firefox. Hopefully now the rogue search box will be gone.

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
