Same here. Just updated to Firefox 19 on Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. Firefox 18 worked like a charm. Can't use Firefox 19 because of the crashes. Is it easy to downgrade to 18 while the glitches are worked out? Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I downloaded a fresh copy of Firefox 19.0 and installed it over the old. No change. I "reset" Firefox and then synced it with my other installations. No change. Still constantly crashing. Here are a few of the latest crash reports. Thanks!

hello, unfortunately this seems to be a crash that is appearing in firefox 19 on windows 8 predominantly with amd graphics cards - developers are investigating the causes of it...

maybe you can try to disable hardware acceleration in firefox > options > advanced > general to address the issue or see if using their latest beta driver is making a ddifference: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx

more options

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can also check for problems caused by plugins.

Hi! Thanks for your suggestions. I tried disabling hardware acceleration. No change--keeps crashing.

I tried downloading and installing the amd beta drivers you lilnked to. After rebooting, I again tested Firefox 19--still keeps crashing. (I have kept hardware acceleration disabled.)

I am disabling add-ons to see if I can link the crashes to one of them. So far, even with virtually every add-on disabled, it's still crashing.

FYI, here are the latest crash reports. Don't know if they contain anything new:

BTW this is happening on an hp Pavilion dm1.

Thanks for helping to sort this out.

since this is still in the phase of being investigated, for users affected by this crash (firefox 19 on windows 8 with AMD Radeon HD 6XXX/7XXX gpus) the best option probably is to downgrade to the to the former version at the moment until this gets sorted out: Install an older version of Firefox

That's why it keeps crashing. I have the chipset. Firefox crashes even when I don't even use it. After a while, it will crash out of no where. Firefox has crashed 20 times today. AMD chipset or Firefox, I am guessing firefox. Also, it even blue screened me two times.

Thanks, madperson. I took your advice and downgraded to 18.0.2. Firefox works like a dream again.

Just to update a little: while running 19.0, it kept crashing frequently even with *all* my add-ons disabled. And to echo hinatastar's comment, Windows itself blue screened a number of times over the past couple of days, something that it hasn't done since I first installed Windows 8 on the netbook.

I've disabled Firefox's autoupdate feature for the moment. Is there an easy way to find out if an update has fixed the bug and is safe to install?

Thanks for your help on this forum.

Steven

Steven, you can keep the auto-updater enabled - the automatic updates for firefox on the affected systems were turned off on the server-side & will probably just switched back on again when there is a fix available. you can also keep an eye on the bug report, that cor-el has linked to before - there the ongoing process to fix the crash is documented...

narayan318, thanks for reporting your crash report ids - this is exactly the same issue as reported by other users in this thread, so the same advice also applies to you: please downgrade to firefox 18 until this is sorted out.

I don't know what those crashes are about. A lot look like caused by garbage collection (JavaScript).

You can try some basic steps.

Try a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

If you keep having problems then also try a new profile.
