Since v.19 upgrade, FF loads blank new tab that can't be closed on every start up

Since the upgrade, every time I start my browser there is a blank new tab that can't be closed. I select Morning coffee (which I use to load a certain set of tabs) and the blank one still remains. It can be moved. It can't be closed.

I'm wondering what's causing this and how to fix it.

  1. 2 I also notice a lot of links suddenly opening in new windows even though I have the browser configured to open in a new tab....EXAMPLE: On my NetVibes portal I click on a "Daily Beast" article and it opens in a new window. Until recently, that was not true. I have Tab mix plus configured to open in a new tab. But something is overriding that

I looked around and saw some old threads on the blank tab issue but something relating to FF 14 probably has little use and I'm not inclined to wreck my profile just to keep ff 19 that I probably shouldn't have upgraded to in the first place (yes, I never learn....)

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Thanks but reinstalling, fixing a lot of stuff is particularly what I would like to avoid. *Must keep reminding myself to not update FF on any regular basis.*

If I revert to version 18, would that take care of it?

If you go into options, what do you have as your home page settings?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can also try to open a new window and close the other window to see if the new window works better.

You can check for problems with the localstore.rdf file.
