My Firefox haomepage has been cannibalized - please help.

more options

My Mozilla firefox home page appears to have been cannibalized by this web site:

http://www.searchnu.com/406

Norton security software is installed. That triggers the following alert message on my desktop:

"An attempt to change your default page (Mozilla) has been successfully blocked."

Unfortunately, it appears that message is incorrect because the default page comes up as searchnu and not Mozilla Firefox.

I have also gone into the Mozilla settings, to ensure the default page is Mozilla, again without success.

Any help, advice, and/or assistance on this would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Tom.

Chosen solution

Hi Tom, It seems like one of the addon installed on your browser is causing this. Try removing the addons that you do not use. Go To, firefox > Addons Now in the Extensions and Plugins menu, remove the addons and extensions that are not in use.

Alternatively you can choose to reset your browser and get back to the original clean one. Open a new tab, in the navigation bar type about:support Now on the page that show up click on Reset Firefox and you are done.

Cheers!

Hi Dron,

Many thanks for the very prompt reply to my problem with two possible solutions.

The first solution did not work for me, but the alternative approach offered in your second para above did. Thank you.

I am very grateful to you. Cheers!

Tom

p.s. Fwiw, searchnu tried to replace itself again after implementation of the alternative solution, which failed when I went into settings to check the default page back to Mozilla Firefox. Subsequent tests now show that to be a fully effective restoration of Mozilla on my desktop. Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Tom, Well its usual that users caught themselves as victim of such addons(they often work as malwares), please be advised to not to install any free ToolBar that often came up with Free Downloaders always install addons from inside of the firefox.

To get completely rid off searchnu Addon

  1. Go to Control Panel > Unistall Programs
  2. Uninstall anything that says ToolBar or Free ToolBar
  3. Now try restarting system.

Cheers!
