Win XP SP 3 . On updating Firefox from 21 to 22 under the help button , it says restart. Firefox will not restart when I click on the short cut on the desk top, nor when I go to the Firefox program folder and double click on the Launcher, nothing happens, no diaglox box, no browser !.

I have tried restarting the computer , I have tried system restore to the day before and Windows says cannot restore to the created point. I do not want to go back a further day, becuase I would then lose 4 other programs I have since installed and registered .

I have built fire fox up and dont want to lose all the addons and customisations . Why dont you test your updates before releasing them ? What is the point in releaseing an update that stops it from working ?

How can i revert to the earlier version ?

Hello,

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

Hello Proveright, if you can not open firefox even in firefox safe mode then, try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) and check firefox again.

(If works in Windows Safe mode then you have a problem with other software, like security software or maybe a system driver, that is running on your computer).

thank you

Many thanks for the two prompt replies , however the issue has resolved it self, before I could see your replies . All the other progs were working fine on the Computer . I shut down and restarted the Computer again and double clicked on Firefox icon, again nothing appeared to happen.

Worried if IE ever went down I would not be able to access the internet , I searched for some other browsers and started downloading them. As it was the early hours, here, I went to bed and left one download still going , waiting to complete. I had not installed anything new yet, and when I went back to the Computer to check if the download had finished in IE and there was firefox already opened up on the screen and says version 22, and working now ok !

It must have been a good 1 and half to 2 hours since I had clicked FF short cut and nothing had happened , and returned to the check the computer, having left the computer on , while download in IE.

How long it had specifically taken I don't know . Perhaps someone can research why the update to FF takes so long to take effect as it certainly made me panic what I appeared to have lost, as FF is my favourite browser.

However it is good to know to try FF in safe mode , if it ever happens again . And thanks for the prompt replies again, it is nice to know this browser is well supported.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
