On my system (windows xp pro en) I have to use java 1.6.0_16 in order to secure e-sign documents with a smart card using RSA security center (rev 1.2, build 10) and RSA authentication client (Rev 2.0.1, build268).

I can do that without any problem with ie8, but i can't do it with firefox 23.0.1. The problem occurred after a Firefox update, if i remember correct version to 20 (or so...). With previous versions of Firefox I had no problem signing with the use of the smart card.

Take into consideration that if I update the java, I will not be able to sign the documents, since the version of RSA that my company use is compatible only with java 1.6.0_16.

This because your version of Java is out-of-date and no longer supported by the Firefox program.

Ok. I have the same problem with smart card reader and java on my work website (corporate environment) .

I have tried lots of suggested solutions found them on the forums,.... but neither works, because old java is not supported (but with java 1.7 I can`t work).

My solution. Switching to Google Chrome is the best solution. With the same old Java (1.6) Chrome is working perfectly (and yes, Chrome is opening popup window with advertisement of old java plugin. Why this can`t be done in Firefox too ?!? )

Firefox developers.

Firefox is loosing users. Even at my job lots of colleagues switched from Firefox to Chrome because they had the same problem. Please think about this.
