Cannot run speedtest or speakeasy

more options

I cannot run any of the speedtests (speedtest.net or speakeasy.net) from Firefox (newest version), IE or Google Chrome. I have update flash player and Java. The computer has been tested for infections and none are found. The Hosts file looks fine. Temp files have been removed. The speedtest.net works in IE10 in safe mode. Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64 bit, 8 GB RAM, etc.

Chosen solution

The problem has been resolved. The Total Defense Security Program was the cause of this issue. Once it was uninstalled (had to use Revo Uninstaller) since it would not uninstall correctly from within Windows, the speedtest worked fine. The computer ran much better. I do not understand why Tigerdirect stores keep pushing the rotten program and installing it on customer built computers. They need to stop doing this and stop selling this crap.

What occurs when you try to run the above sites?
Any error messages or crashes?

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

FirefoxSafeMode

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Please report back soon.

Since all three browsers are affected, that doesn't sound like a Firefox support issue. You might want to try one of the Broadband fora.

Does Flash otherwise work?

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
