Firefox 24: "Show all Bookmarks" hangs in clean, fresh install on Windows XP

Firefox 24. A _clean install_ (during the previous remove I specified 'delete my profile') with no added addons or plugins and no imported bookmarks or bookmarks added by the user hangs when I select "Show all Bookmarks" from the Bookmarks menu. The Library window opens, but when you click once on any item at All Bookmarks or below on the left panel, or any of the items in the right panel, the Library window is hung, and must be killed with Task Manager.

This problem also happens if you have lots of bookmarks, a slightly above average number of plugins and addons, and lots of history.

I will not automatically add troubleshooting information because I have dropped back to Firefox 23 (which does not have this problem) in order to submit this trouble report.

Windows XP Pro, SP3, up-to-date with Windows Update.

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is hanging.

Can you please specify the information below:

  • RAM
  • Remaining Memory

When you removed Firefox before, did you manually delete the Firefox root folder and application data folder?

3668004K Total Physical Memory per Task Manager. With Firefox 23 with 6 tabs open, Outlook 2003 open, a Cygwin X-windows server open, and an MS Windows HTML help file open, 2380092K available per Task Manager. The problem is reproducible with only one tab open under Firefox 24. This isn't a memory or CPU shortage problem -- when the Library window hangs there is _lots_ of CPU available on this dual-core system.

No, I did not manually delete the Firefox root folder and application data folder. But, I did not delete them before installing Firefox 23, which does not have the problem...

I deleted the old profile when I removed Firefox 24 before the clean, fresh, install. That includes places.sqlite.

(I made a copy of the profile on the desktop, and I made an html backup of the bookmarks from Firefox 24 before I removed it.)

I restored my bookmarks from a .html backup into Firefox 23 -- no problem using 'Show all bookmarks' to reorganize them after doing so.

I also restored other files from the saved profile into the new Firefox 23 profile as per this article:

[Recovering important data from an old profile] https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile#w_copying-files-between-profile-folders

   key3.db
   signons.sqlite
   permissions.sqlite
   formhistory.sqlite
   cookies.sqlite
   cert8.db
   mimeTypes.rdf
   downloads.sqlite

Note that this does not include places.sqlite -- I restored the bookmarks from an html backup file. Firefox 23 seems to work fine - at least 'show all bookmarks' doesn't hang, but works as expected, after restoring the bookmarks from html and the other files listed above.
