"Firefox can't find the server at c"
When I try to open a local .htm file, I get "Firefox can't find the server at c." Also, in the address bar of my previous version of FF, I could type file://etc. without the file name; it would display the local directory, from which I could choose a file that it would display. Now, that doesn't happen, either, on FF 25.0. I've found something that seems related to this at bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637052. Suggestions?

In order to be able to find the correct solution to your problem, we require some more non-personal information from you. The bug you provided was raised in Firefox 4.0 beta version and might not be applicable in the latest version.

I tested this on Firefox 25.0, by opening a local HTML file and was able to open the file without any issues. So having more information will definitely help in narrowing down the problem.
Can you please do the following:
- Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information from the submenu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select Troubleshooting Information from the menu.
Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
- At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
- Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

Does running Firefox in Safe Mode have any effect on your issue?
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)
- If you have many extensions then first enable half of the extensions to test which half has the problem.
- Continue to divide the bad half that still has the issue until you find which one is causing it.
I've found an interesting situation. When started in safe mode, my FFv25.0 displays local directories. However, it still won't display files from within those directories: it displays then the original error message.
How do those links look if you right-click and use copy link location to copy the link to the clipboard?
They look correct: file:///c:/Users/Detail/Documents/filename.htm
