also, can you replicate the same behaviour if you boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support ?

in win 8 : hold Shift button and mash the F8 key, if you see the new recovery mode, choose See advanced repair options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Windows Startup Settings > click Restart button > Advanced Boot Options > choose Safe mode with networking.

(to enable F8 key for safe mode with networking in win 8, like 7 and vista, go : CTRL + SHIFT + ESC > File > Run new task > write cmd.exe in the run new task window > check mark the Create this task with administrative privileges > when you see the : C:\Windows\System32> continue and write the next command bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy > click Enter > you can see the Operation completed successfully. Now when you boot and hold the F8 you can see the Advanced Boot Options.....safe mode, safe mode with networking etc.)

(If works in Windows Safe mode then probably you have problem with other software, like security software or maybe a system driver, that is running on your computer).

But why does it only crash or hang in Google searches?? This will last anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds, then it will be ok until i do another search, then the same thing happens again, it does not completely crash, but comes around after a few seconds!

After you restarted in Firefox Safe Mode did you test google searches and did you still see the problem? Firefox Safe Mode turns off hardware acceleration and disables all extensions temporarily.

I'm asking because you have the "avast! Online Security 9.0.2006.53" extension and I found another user who reported a similar issue with google searches a couple of days ago, and he said, I think it's the Avast online security 9.0.2006.53 Plugin that is the culprit. See:

I would suggest going to the Firefox Add-ons Extensions list and disabling the "avast! Online Security 9.0.2006.53" extension temporarily. (See Disable or remove Add-ons for details). If that works then try updating your Avast software or contact Avast support.

OK I tried Firefox safe mode and it made it faster- it did Google searches with no problems, then i went back to regular mode and disabled avast in the extensions, and it was lagging again, i only have avast in my extensions thats it!

So it's not avast! I don't have any add-ons, and a few plugins, but they seem normal, here's the list:

adobe acrobat

intel identity protection technology (two of these)

real networks (real-player)- (all of them)

shock wave flash

silver light plugin

yahoo application state

Photo gallery

So is it one of these plugins? Thanks!

I am still testing and yes in Firefox safe mode in Google searches are fast with no freezes!

I guess i cant keep it in safe mode? I do need avast, and disabling avast in my extensions did not help it, so it must be a plugin? The list i gave you above i placed them all in ( ask to activate) is that ok? but that did not help it ?

You could try disabling ALL of your extensions and restart Firefox, to see if the problem goes away when you run Firefox normally with all extensions disabled.

If disabling all extensions doesn't help then disable hardware acceleration in Firefox:

1. Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
2. In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
3. In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox , as shown below. Uncheck this checkbox and click OK.
4. Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Hi! I already unchecked the {hardware acceleration) that did not help!

IN my extensions i deleted everything but avast! But when i disable avast in my extensions that does not help! Again this freeze for a a few seconds is only in Google searches!

What i read online is there is a conflict with Firefox and Google that has not been fixed, seems many people are having this problem!

It might be a plugin, from my list above what do you think? ...and how do you delete a plugin, it only shows me how to -always activate, never activate, or ask to activate.

I already reset Firefox, reinstalled it, updated it, ran virus scans, in (boot) also, nothing im clean! also connected from different internet connections, that did not help!   what now?

Does running in Firefox Safe Mode help or not?

In any case, if you want to troubleshoot your plugins, there's no need to uninstall them. Just go to the Firefox Add-ons Plugins list and change them all to "Never Activate".

P.S. You did say you tried a Firefox Reset right? That will reset preferences and remove all added extensions (except for global extensions that are installed for all profiles) while keeping important data . See Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

A Firefox reset doesn't remove cookies. You did say you cleared cookies? See Clear cookies and site data in Firefox

Another option is to create a new Firefox profile. See Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles

RinaGomez, I would try again to disable the "avast! Online Security" in your Add-ons Extensions list again, but this time, after closing Firefox, restart the computer to make sure that that Firefox has been completely closed, then when the computer restarts, open Firefox and try again.

Well good news!!

You where right, disabling avast in the extensions works, now my searches in Google are fast with no lags!-- the trick for me was restating my computer, never did that before! Works!

But, disabling avast in my extensions- will I still be protected? What changes will happen?

This is only about the extension(s) that Avast add to Firefox and that aren't fully compatible with the current Firefox release. Avast will have to release an update for their extension. The Avast program itself will still function in the background and protect you.

But am I less protected now in my Firefox searches ?

why does this only only lag in Google searches?? 

...and where do I write avast about this problem, are they aware of this?

What I think you should do is to keep the "avast! Online Security" extension disabled for now and update your Avast software to the latest version, to see if that resolves the extension problem. Like cor-el mentioned, your Avast security program itself will still run in the background to protect you. Keeping Firefox and other software up-to-date will also help to guard you from many vulnerabilities as you browse the Web. Hey guys! ...I just thought i would give you a update. I made a support ticket for avast concerning this issue, they wrote me back saying i need to completely uninstall avast and reinstall it and that they are working on this fix, did not sound too promising! (working on this fix)

I have seen many people with this issue and and well over a year, wonder how long it will take them to correct this?
