after installing Flash player updates, Recently Closed Windows in History menu lost
Hi Friends, This is just an annoying problem, not really serious, I guess. Whenever I download and install Flash Player updates, History > Recently Closed Tabs, and History > Recently Closed Windows, are wiped out.
This is a problem for me, because when I log on to my computer every morning, I use History > Restore Previous Session, to get back all the tabs I had open the night before. And often also Recently closed Windows, if I had a 2nd and/or 3rd Ff window open last night. After I install Flash Player, the previous session becomes the Adobe update site. I think I can avoid losing the previous session, by making sure I open my previous session before I start the download and installation.
(I don't use fully automatic updates for Flash. I have the system alert me when it's ready, and then the next time I log on to the internet, the download popup window appears. I don't know why it waits until the next time I log on, instead of right after I click ok (and also ok on Spybot S&D and WinPatrol alerts). And I know you can't provide support for that part. But just to let you know all the relevant info :-) .)
So normally, if I've done something to lose my previous session (with all my usual tabs) (usually when I'm in a hurry and don't notice that I've opened Ff without restoring previous session) I can still get that session because it shows up in Recently Closed Windows.
But after I install the Flash update, Recently Closed Windows (and Recently closed Tabs) are both wiped out.
I'm hoping someone can sort this out, and I can just change some setting somewhere, to prevent this. Or maybe like the previous session, and remembering to open it, before I start the dl, it might just be a matter or altering my habits. I can't think of any habit changing that would work though. So that's why I'm asking all you wise Ff users :-) Hopefully it's not a bug?
Thank you very much for any insight, comments or suggestions :-D All best.
Chosen solution
Ok, I just got the next update, and here's what happened.
(Again, this could all be avoided if the update would occur at the time I'm first alerted to it. But then, that's probably an Adobe Flash issue, which I know you can't help with.)
So I logged on to my computer today, and there was the new update (which I had approved when the alert came up, yesterday) (Spybot S&D alert). Instead of logging on to the internet and immediately doing the update, I opened my previous session, and 2 other instances of Ff that were open last night. Then I started the update process. So far, so good.
However, after it downloaded, it gave me an error message, that Ff has to be closed, before it would continue. So I closed them. And then the Flash update continued.
After it was finished, it did NOT open a new Ff window on the Adobe site, like it did before. Therefore, my Previous Session and Recently Closed Windows remained intact!
So it seems to be a successful workaround, for me, to open all my Ff windows before starting the update process. Although it's a bit of a pain to open all the windows, start the update, close them all, and open again when the update is finished.
I still think there's a problem in the works, somewhere. Because the way I was doing it originally, it did not JUST overwrite the previoius session, as phillipp explained. It also makes the Recently Closed Windows unavailable (grayed out). If the Recently Closed Windows were still available, I could still find all my windows there.
Ideally, I'd like it if someone could investigate why the Recently Closed Windows become grayed out, when the Flash update process overwrites the previous session. And if it's a problem or bug, put it on the bug tracker (wherever it is).
But otherwise, I'll be on my way, with at least this sort of workaround. Because even though it's a pain, with all the opening and closing, at least it does preserve my sessions.
Thanks in advance if someone could look into this :-)
All best.

Crashes or other problems with certain multimedia content in Firefox (such as Youtube videos and Flash animations or games) can often be resolved by performing the steps in these Knowledge Base articles:
On Windows Vista and above, you can disable Flash protected mode by following the instructions on these pages:
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Disabling_Protected_Mode_in_Flash_11.3
(See this Adobe blog post for technical details about Flash protected mode.)
Please tell us if this helped!
Hello,
Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).
To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:
- Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
- Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
- Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
- Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.
The image "fpSettings1.PNG" does not exist.
- Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
- Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
- Restart Firefox.
This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.
Does this solve the problem? Let us know.
Please note that I searched the Ff kb, help files and support site, before posting this topic.

This problem doesn't concern crashes or other problems with multimedia content.

Downloading and installing the updates has nothing to do with protected mode (whatever that is).

This problem doesn't concern video playback.
{off topic} I know my message is more wordy than many prefer. And I apologize for that. However, I think it's better that whoever wants to try to help, has all the relevant info.
I also think it's better if those who reply, completely read the message, and understand the problem before replying. It's quite annoying when someone replies by spitting out search results from what they consider key words in my message. {/off topic}
hello, this problem happens since the adobe installer triggers the opening of a browser window once the update is finished, which then overwrites the last session...
you could try if adding SilentAutoUpdateEnable=1 to the adobe mms.cfg configuration file addresses that issue, as described here: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/administration-configure-auto-update-notification.html
Oh, thank you philipp!
I'm not sure if that's exactly what the problem is. Although if we can't come up with another solution, I'll probably try it. I just like to know when the update is ready, so I can choose when to download and install.
Anyway, the 1st Ff window that opens, is when I click to download. That window takes me through 2 or 3 steps or pages, all in 1 tab. Then when the installation is finished, another tab opens.
I think I can avoid losing the last session, by opening it, before I start the Flash download/install. Even though it will overwrite the last session, as long as I close the Flash-opened window before I close the session I want to keep, I think I will be able to keep my last session.
The problem, is that "last night" I often had 2 or 3 other instances of Ff open (each with several tabs open), in addition to my main session, (which is my last session). Normally I can restore those other 2 sessions using History menu > Recently Closed Windows. But somehow, after I do the Flash update, Recently Closed Windows is grayed out. (I assume that means it's empty.)
So even if I can manage to keep my last session, somehow the Recently Closed Windows are wiped out, when I do the Flash update.
Ooohh wait!! I know! If I open not just my last session, but those 1 or 2 Recently Closed Windows as well, before I start the download -- maybe that would work?
I still think there's some problem with Ff, with those menus being wiped out. But I think there's a good chance I can avoid it by reopening ALL my previous sessions, before I start the update.
Ok, I don't want to mark this topic solved yet, because it's not technically solved, to my understanding.
What I'd like to do, is go through another update, and try out my theory (by opening all my old sessions before I start the update). It would be like a workaround, I guess.
So can I leave this topic not marked solved, until I get another update?
