Can access to browser settings and options be restricted?

Is it possible to deny access to firefox settings and options? I don't want my children adding or disabling plugins, changing their home page, clearing browser history, etc. I'm quite happy with the web filtering options to block content and downloads but don't want changes to be made to the browser itself without my permission.

This is not yet a built in Firefox feature, but it can be done by using the Public Fox add-on to set a password to these settings.

Note that any restriction added by an extension can easily be bypassed by starting Firefox in Safe Mode (i.e. holding down the Shift key when you start Firefox). So this will only work with very young children that do not know their way around with Firefox.

It is possible to lock the home page with a mozilla.cfg file to prevent changing this page.

See:

Other settings that are saved as a pref can be locked as well, but you can't prevent them from clearing the history or disabling extensions and plugins.

You could hide the about:addons page with code in userContent.css.

@-moz-document url-prefix(about:addons) { #addons-page { display:none !important; } }

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.
