Thunderbird 24.4.0 stopped working when I upgraded to Avast 2014 antivirus.
Also tried AVG 2014 with same result. Anybody else having the same problem? Anybody have any fixes?
I also tried uninstalling 24.4.0 and installing a later version. Same problem.

In general it is a good idea not to let your anti-virus s/w scan the Thunderbird profile folder.
When I open Thunderbird it says it's connecting to gmail (I use gmail), starts the receive process but never completes.
Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.
