Why can't I now get all the emails I've been working on over past month or retrieve any of my archive folders?

On 6.1.15 I opened my Mozilla Thunderbird email account and the screen invited me to set up a new account - there were no incoming emails or any of the 20+ archive folders I use regularly. It appeared to want me to sign up for another email address (one of Mozilla's partners)which I did not want. It gave me the option to skip and use my current email address which I went ahead with. However, the database was searched and it said there was no trace of the email address I had been using on Mozilla for the past 6 months. The system would not allow me to proceed further without opening a new account. I did that and am getting new emails but I have lost everything else. Any help would be appreciated please.
