New update today will not download emails. It say it is downloading them but does not. Old version does. Why?

This morning I restarted Thunderbird. I got a message saying that Thunderbird was installing updates. After that I now cannot download my emails. It says it is downloading my messages but will not. I have an older version that still does download my messages. Why does the new updates refuse to download my emails? Again, it gives me a message that says it is downloading the messages but will not. Home HP computer with Windows 8.1. Thunderbird is making a connection with my Centurytel.net address or it wouldn't give me that message. William Shanaman
