I get an error msg "Inbox is full". I can't get new messages

I have many messages in my email Inbox. I have never received this error message before. I have archived or deleted hundreds of emails out of the Inbox but I still get the same error message when I select "Get Messages". The error message is "Your folder Inbox is full.....". Besides deleting messages, I have restarted my email account. Help. What else can I do.

Thank you Airmail. I compacted my folders. What does that mean? Can I just open my folders or are there steps needed to uncompact folders?
