Hello,

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

tyler, it was you who suggested i update FF because the older version i was using had to be replaced almost immediately. i am now locked out of one of my often-used bank-card accounts. now you suggest i revert to an earlier version. i really don't get it. i now have 61.0.1 quantum version, the one you suggested. i was happy with what i had, aside from hang and stalling. i'm bothered that i have to wait for my card company to help me reset the account log-in. .. i've gone through the Preferences section to see if i can reset from there, but, honestly, i'm afraid to for fear of screwing things up more..

oy!!

I'm not at all suggesting you go back to an earlier version. I'm asking you to refresh your version.

this is a version of "the more i know, the more i have to know". so "refreshing" will NOT send it back to the stone age? i only just installed this new version; will this "refresh" be the same as re-installing a program? forgive my ignorance; i'm mostly upset that my major bank-card company does not recognize my log-in. i had my settings at "remember me". and Yahoo asks me to log in each time, even though the remember me option has been clicked. ... shouldn't these settings have been transferred to the newer version?

Refreshing just sets some settings back to default. It doesn't change the version of Firefox you have.

So you're saying your passwords got lost?

more options

yes, i have to go through all the websites i use and try to "save" the log-ins..... i'll try later i have to walk the dogs.. e.g- yahoo will not save my log-in anymore, which it has done previously. at least my log-in for joomla is still good. it's beyond me why some work and some don't.

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

Make sure you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History).

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • remove checkmark: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • you can create an "Allow" exception to keep specific cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: Exceptions

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
  • clearing "Cookies" will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an "Allow" exception you may want to keep

these websites have always remembered me and i've had very few issues up until this latest FF upgrade. now my log-ins are off, even yahoo mail asks me every time to log in... i did nothing except download the upgrade.. nothing.

You want to keep the cookies.

Make sure Tracking Protection is Off.

Hi did you do a Refresh that was suggested to you ? What security Software are you using please ?

more options

i haven't had a chance yet to do the refresh. i did look for it, but i wasn't sure how to locate it....and my bank-card account is back up and running.. i was able to log in easily. i will, however, perform no more upgrades until i see the specifics of the upgrade.... this last one was way too bothersome..

The problem you had with an update was because you waited so long between updates. Please set Firefox to auto-update, and you shouldn't have issues like that between updates. It's better for your security anyway.

ok, well, i'm done beating this up. i did the damn upgrade, and i won't do any for a long time. (thanks, though, for the great feedback and some of the helpful suggestions.) firefox is not my first choice of browsers, i prefer safari, but even apple screwed that up. all i ever wanted was a decent rss feed, really, that's it.. an rss feed. .....
