Strange characters in "Reply To"
This has just begun happening: when I hit "Reply," in the first section of the quoted email I get a huge list of strange characters; here's an example:
PK?????!ߤlZ? ????[Content_Types].xml ??(?n0?E?Ub袪*?>-R??{?VǼ??QU? l"%33Vƃښl ?w%?=^i7+-d?&0A6l4?L6?0#ÒS O?X*V$z3??3?%p)O???^??5}nH"?dsXgL`?|ԟ|Prۃs????PW?t?t4Q+"wa|T\y,N?U%-D/?ܚXݞ(??<E??)?;N?L?F˼?܉?<Fk h?yڜq?i?ޯli1]Hg?m@?m??PK?????!??N????_rels/.rels ??(?j0?@ѽQ?N/c???[IL?j<?]aGӓzsFu]?U ^[x1xp?f#I)ʃY????*D?i")c$qU~31jH[{?=E??~ f?3-]Tꓸ2j),?l0/%b </p>
I can delete them, which is fine...just wondering what CAUSED it to happen when I didn't change any settings or do anything. Am running latest update of Windows 10 & latest up[date of Thunderbird.

Hello there joanm48
we have read your problem message. This is if you start the program and write a mail -To reply This is where the message should be located? Firefox volunteer.
Hi there It is because other reply emails that you have received from others have not had good files that have now penetrated your editor. This could be done by copying messages from an unknown notepad or text editor. Use a good one from now on in order to prevent this. Also the coding language should be on utf-8. This can be found in your settings menu for Firefox Thunderbird. I am looking for these for you to come here.
regards Firefox Volunteer.
It could also be the case if you have e-mailed in other languages, for example in Chinese or another language, it could be that it is incorrectly coded. When it comes to sending back emails. In this case, the unicode should be reset to Utf-8. This can be found in the menu for coding.

So sorry, but NONE of the situations you outlined exist: I do not send/receive in a different language...my incoming and outgoing are all formatted as "Unicode" (there is no "UTF-8" option)...and I have never copied messages from an unknown notepad or text editor. This issue seems to come up only sporadically: for instance, just this afternoon I tried responding to a contact I've been communicating with for several months with no problem, yet today when I clicked on "Reply" it came up with all the ASCII characters inserted before his message.

Looking at your example, there is a very good chance the gobble de gook is a zip file. They start with PK in the first 2 bytes of the file. But the XML file name in there is not consistent with the data being a ZIP file, so if it only happened the once I would have to say if is some sort of memory glitch on your computer which was Thunderbird read rubbish from memory, probably left over from something you did earlier.
If it happen over and over, then looking at things like anti virus might be warranted. They can actually cause glitches, not just block malware.
I have a similar problem to joanm48.
However starting Thunderbird in safe mode does not fix the problem.
The Gobble de Gook starts with 'PK'
I tried to add an image of problem page but Browse button below would not copy the .pdf file selected.
Can any body help?

Since I wrote my response to this thread I have learned that Microsoft office docX and other X file formats are zipped XML files.
So in both instances I guess we are seeing a word document, or other office document. Probably erroneously added as a signature file. But really I am guessing and as I have had no feedback about my guesses this is just a refinement of what I said earlier.
Thanks very much Matt from NoelG Sydney.
I changed the email signature template format to .html & probl;ems fixed.
Much appreciated & all the Best for 2019.
