I had to have a clean install of Windows 10 (1903). I have re-installed Thunderbird but it will not connect with gmail. I have spent hours checking and re-checking the settings, authentication etc. I have switched o the google 'allow less secure apps'. Nothing works, yet I have been able to connect another non-gmail account. I get all the way through Gmail security and click to allow TB access then I get the error message 'Unable to login at the server. Probably an incorrect configuration, username or password.' Does anyone have any ideas?

Here is the bug report: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1592407

I expect this will be resolved fairly soon, and in the meantime using normal password authentication is a reasonable workaround.

Does it work if you use normal password authentication instead of OAuth2, which the account wizard applies by default?

I also encountered the same problems, but my gmail account that were succesfully able to login are the one that I set on "allow less secure apps" turned on. Two out of four my gmail account weren't able to succesfully login into thunderbird despite following the oath2 identification.

This problems happen after I restore my system to previous day where I haven't installed thunderbird, I'm using Windows 10 64 bit. After reinstalling Thunderbird I haven't been able to login to my gmail account on thunderbird using the usual methods that were previously worked just fine.

Before I restore my windows I had 4 gmail account that worked perfectly on Thunderbird, all of them can login into thunderbird. But now I can only login only two of my gmail account.

I tried reinstalling and uinstalling the software, upgrading to the latest version and even tried the beta version. None of them worked like the time before I restore my windows.

I checked the password and the configuration and all of them are correct and yet I still got this message.

Edit: @sfhowes, I know you're not asking me but when I used normal password I was able to login into two of my gmail alternatives account and those two have been able to be opened on thunderbird. I haven't tried using normal password login on my primary gmail account because I'm worried about the security. Also, I've read the other answer, and it seems the cause is the same. In my case the bug happened where OATH 2 didn't worked correctly is because I used system restore on my computer. Right now I'm using the latest beta version of Thunderbird. Name Thunderbird Version 71.0b1, Build ID 20191024110308.

Thank you for your replies. No it doesn't work if I choose any other authentication but OAuth2.

I've tried all the solutions suggested in various other threads. I'll try to get the beta version of Thunderbird.

I've tried TB 71 - same error. This is where I part company with TB, shame because I really like it.

Thank you very much, changing to normal password worked.

You can apply the workaround in comment 22 of the bugzilla report, and keep using OAuth, or wait for TB 68.2.1 or 60.9.1, which will have a fix.

TB 68.2.1: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/68.2.1/releasenotes/
