Thunderbird automatically updated to 78 - how to roll back for features of the Nostalgy addon
My TB just updated automatically to version 78, despite it saying on your release notes (https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/78.0.1/releasenotes/) that "Thunderbird version 78.0 is only offered as direct download from thunderbird.net and not as an upgrade from Thunderbird version 68 or earlier".
I use (and love) the Nostalgy addon, but this only works with versions 68.0-73.0
Can I roll back to version 73?
Many thanks

version 78 is hateful!! please how do we go back??
I could go into detail, but as described in several other places the update didn't come via Thunderbird mechanism. Some other tool or program on your computer did it.
If you do roll back, then you will want version 68, not 73.
Thank you, Wayne
I'm guessing it was Kaspersky updater...hmmm
I'll take a look at how easy/problematic it might be to roll back to 68. I read briefly the other day that going back from 78 might not be possible.
What two aspects of Nostagly are most appealing to you?
(1) The use of a single keystroke to bring up a list of folders for moving to a given folder or moving a message to one and (2) the ability to then start typing letters from that folder name which brings up a list of folders with those letters to choose from. (3) would be the Shift-letter to repeat the last move (though I realise that TB does this via Ctrl-Shift-M).
I have been making use of the Recent/Favorites features, but there doesn't seem to be any easy/quick way to find a folder that's not on these lists, nor any search facility for folders.
I hear https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/quick-folder-move/ is very good and would help reduce your reliance on Nostalgy. Unfortunately not yet running on 78. But author is active, so ... soon ?
There is also https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/quickfolders-tabbed-folders/ whose author says will be a few weeks before it is compatible. Perhaps in time for when automatic updates from version 68 begin

Greatly appreciated, Wayne
I'll keep my eye on these for when they are released for 78, then try them out to see (as well as hoping that Nostalgy is made compatible with the current version/design - it has been perfect for me and pretty much a 'life-saver')

Wayne, you said that "as described in several other places the update didn't come via Thunderbird mechanism. Some other tool or program on your computer did it." Please double check this. I think there is a bug and/or something has gotten out of wack in some people's profile. I have no other process on my system that would be updating TBird, but it keeps updating without my permission anyway. Weekend-before-last it upgraded to the buggy v78 without asking, and then this past weekend it updated to 78.0.1, in spite of my settings saying not to do that. I had verified these settings after the stealth 78 upgrade. See screen shot. Also, note that the Update History claims there have been no updates. It said the same thing after 78 did its stealth install. (Also, if you'll point me to a better thread to post this to, I will do so.) Thanks!
I need to go back to v68. I do not want to manage two calendars. All the inputs to my Google Calendar which I use only on my android come from syncing from Lightning with Provider which no longer works on V78. I do NOT want google to know everything on my calendar - only when I need "must do" reminders on my cell phone. 1) How do I go back, 2) When will provider for v78 be available?
The updated provider is nearing completion.
Yes, Kaspersky updater is known to force updates

I'm wondering about the reference to this "roll back guide" since it describes going back from v3 to some v2 version...but we are at v78...!?
I would personally like to back from an undesired v78 to v68. Can anyone tell how this is possible with OSX installation?

Thanks for posting this. In fact, we found situations in the Thunderbird UI which in effect bypassed the intended effect of our server update rules. A fix is being tested and hopefully shipped in the coming weeks.
Sorry for the trouble.
