There is a conflict between bookmark toolbar and library
I have a ton of bookmarks. Most of them are not sorted in any way. I can see them all from the Bookmarks drop-down menu and I can see them in the Bookmarks sidebar - but no bookmark is visible in the Bookmarks Library unless it is in a folder. None of my bookmarks is in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder. I never click on the bookmark star, I always save my bookmarks by using the "Bookmark this page" command from the drop-down menu. I can do no sorting from the Bookmarks Library because of course, none of what I want to work with is shown there. I can live with this, because I know about it and work from the bookmarks sidebar, instead. I find the Bookmarks Library to be as useful as an appendix. I still have my appendix and the Library, as neither has given me any trouble. Just can't do anything with them. feh. Am running a mac and have been using a browser since Mosaic 1.x. Gandyman

You can't use the Views menu (button) in the Library to do permanent sorting because that is only for viewing bookmarks in a different order in the Library (equivalent to clicking a column header). You can sort a folder via the right-click context menu of a folder.
Thank you for your reply to my posting. Please note, though, that I do not believe it addresses my posting.
I had expressed no interest in doing any sorting. Most of my bookmarks are not sorted. By that, I mean they are not in any kind of folder. According to the documentation or support notes, these bookmarks should be living in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder. They are not in there and do not show up in any way in the Library.
My comment expresses the simple opinion that the Library serves no useful function (if it cannot display all the bookmarks.)
Respectfully, Gandyman
The Library should display all the bookmarks.
- The Bookmarks Toolbar folder stores the bookmarks that you see on the (View > Toolbars >) Bookmarks Toolbar.
- The Bookmarks Menu folder stores bookmarks that you see in the Bookmarks menu and create via "Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page" or "Bookmark This Link" in the right click context menu.
- The Unsorted Bookmarks folder stores the bookmarks that are created by clicking the star at the right end of the location bar.
If you do not see all the bookmarks in the Library then it is possible that there is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
Cor-el, I must thank you for your energy, and the effort you put into responding to my postings. Responses in writing can often be difficult, as not all of a message is in just the words. Much is missing that would be apparent in a face-to-face conversation. Please know that I am not trying to argue with you or be disagreeable or difficult. Somehow, I seem to have failed to convey the situation which exists with my computer. I use Firefox on a mac, and you use it on a Windows system or a system with a multi-button mouse. We use the same program, but it seems to operate differently on the different platforms.
• I have no problems or issues with the Bookmarks Toolbar or its associated folder. • When the Bookmarks Menu folder is displayed on my computer, it shows up only in the Bookmarks sidebar. In this sidebar display I can see and manipulate all of my bookmarks, no matter where they appear and no matter how I created them. Fine. This is as it should be. I can move them around as I wish, and they stay where I put them. • Yes, the Unsorted Bookmarks folder stores the bookmarks that are created by clicking the star at the right end of the location bar - but I never bookmark anything that way - it is not convenient for me to do so, so this particular folder is empty.
• I create my bookmarks by use of the "Bookmark this page" command in the drop-down Bookmarks menu. Since they are not sorted or distributed into some categorical folder, they do not appear in the Library. This may be the key question, why do they not show up in the Library? I have actually created a few folders for some of my bookmarks that I can categorize - and those folders do appear in the Library and I can see the contents of those folders if I wish. Why bother? I can't see any of my other bookmarks there.
The Library is a crippled feature and does not serve me or do anything for me. It has neither the convenience nor the functionality of the sidebar, and it does not even contain all of my bookmarks. This is also the way the Library has worked in the earlier version of Firefox on my computers. Also, in doing a search of my hard drive, there is no visible file named "places.sqlite." Again, this is a mac, and things seem to happen differently here. Respectfully, Gandyman
