How can I open a new tab from a previous tab
I had things set up so when I opened a tab it would have a + on its right hand side in a little box that you could click on to open a new blank tab. This gave you the ability to use your bookmarks in the new tab. I no longer have this. I don't know if I somehow changed to a different toolbar or not. I also would like to make the edges of the window more opaque to see the toolbar better. Can you help with this?

You can open links in a new tab with a middle click or a Ctrl + left click.
You can open a new tab with a double-click on empty space on the Tab bar or via the Firefox menu Firefox > New Tab (Ctrl+T)
You can find the New Tab button showing as a '+' on the Tab bar.
You can open the Customize window and drag the New Tab button that shows as a plus sign (+) from the Tab bar on another toolbar and it will become a regular toolbar button like the New Tab button that you have in Firefox 3 versions.
If you can't find the New Tab button then click the "Restore Default Set" button in the Customize window.
If you want the New Tab button at the far right end of the Tab bar then place a flexible space to the left of it.

The "New Tab" button is still available, but it has been somewhat destroyed by the introduction and management of "Tabs on Top" depending on placement and if the tabs fill up the tabs bar. You can avoid the problem by moving the "New Tab" button from the tabs bar to the Navigation bar and it's appearance will change from a plus sign to a black silhouette of a rectangle with a tab on top and a white "+" inside.

You can make Firefox Firefox 5.0 look like Firefox 3.6.19, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 5.0, or 4.0.1, look like 3.6). Whether or not you make changes, you should be aware of what has changed and what you have to do to use changed or missing features.
There are many ways of opening a new tab, such as Ctrl+T to pen a new tab, and a companion keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+T to reopen a closed tab. More ways of opening a new tab can be found in
If not familiar with customizing the toolbar, see
and if your customizations are getting lost there is link for that too, but as already mentioned the "+" can disappear and reappear in normal usage if on the tabs bar.
