Try pressing Alt again. Or you could try updateing to version 6 of Firefox. In version 6 you can get rid of the menu bar and merging it into the 'Firefox' button.

Does the Menu Bar entry in View > Toolbars or Firefox > Options ave a check-mark?

The menu bar will only auto-hide if the menu bar is hidden.
