Suddenly, and for no apparent reason, I have begun to receive this message when I try to download or send e-mail messages. I have input my correct e-mail address and password, and can successfully acquire my e-mail messages when I log into my Virgin Media web e-mail account when using the same password. I have even tried removing Thunderbird from my computer and then downloading it again.
Could someone please help me to sort this out?

I should add that when I try to connect using Thunderbird, I receive a further message: "Application specific password required: https://support.google.accounts/bin/answer.py?question/answer=185833(Failure)". I do have a Gmail address, but I am using my Virgin Media address on this computer.
You've enabled 2-factor authentication for your Google account. Follow the instructions and create an application specific password for Thunderbird.

Thanks Christ1. How do I remove 2-factor authentication?
Btw, I must have set up this 2-factor authentication last December, when I got my phone. Why should it only now be causing problems?

Done that. Simple when you know how!
Thunderbird now seems to be working properly. Many thanks for your help.
