When I try to reply or compose a message a new window starts to open, but freezes.
Recently upgraded to 31.1.0. I tried disabling all add-ons, but I still have the problem It worked fine until I upgraded. I haven't added any other programs. I'm running Windows 7 and use Norton for my anti-virus. I see where some anti-virus programs can cause some problems, but I didn't see anything on Norton. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am not aware of a specific problem with Nortons and your issue, but I also do not see other with the issue. so to diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:
Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
