I deleted the foldertree.json and panacea.dat files, removed all the popstat folders but am still getting the folders showing up in my tree. This just started two days ago. I went back in to the Thunderbird folder and the the foldertree.json and panacea.dat were re-created. What gives?

Those files are part of the profile. If you remove them, they will be re-created. They control the appearance of the window. If you want to modify the appearance, you could try the settings.

I checked the settings and there is nothing there that lets me do anything with appearance of popstate.dat folders.

Maybe this information will help:

If you do not like the appearance of folder images, you could try a complete theme.
