Technical Problems about Firefox ESR 31.0
Dear Support,
Grateful for your advice on the following items please:- 1. When we change the default character encoding via View > Character Encoding > Unicode through Firefox browser, the encoding can be changed. However, such setting cannot be saved, i.e. the default character encoding remains unchanged when the browser is re-opened again. 2. When opening a link that is a text file, the text file will be displayed at the Firefox browser. Is there a way to open a text file for display via Notepad.
The version of the Firefox version being used is Firefox ESR 31.0.
As the system is now in production use and our users urge us for the solution, your reply reply will be highly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Hi schiu, There is a Firefox ESR mailing list that can give you a faster answer: *https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/
Is there a lock file, this might be keeping the preference from changing. Also see: How to fix preferences that won't save
Hi Support,
Thank you for your reply.
However, I cannot save the preference according to your suggestions as though I've tried previously and re-installed FireFox ESR 31 several times.
Please help advise and in particular how to open a link to a text file via Notepad instead of a new Firefox tab. Thank you very much.
There is built in support for text files, which is why there is not a listed MIME type for TXT in the applications menu.
However if you right click the link and save the file as, it should give an option to open with a particular application.
Once ""Do this automatically for files like this from now on."" is selected, txt files will be listed in the Applications list, where you can manage the action from there.
Hi Support,
Thanks for reply.
I tried your advice with a text file. The ""Do this automatically for files like this from now on." option did not appear when I right-click the link. Then, I saved the text file into the local drive but the text file format does not appear in the Applications list.
However, it works properly with Word files.
For your further advice please. Thank you very much.
Hi Support,
May I have your further advice please. Thank you very much.
Hi schiu, At this point I would have to recommend looking for an add on that might accomplish this. Revisiting I was not able to do this either, however it was mentioned as a work around in another source. (My apologies)
Open in Browswer opens the file in the browser, not in a text edit program: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/fire.../open-in-browser/
To confirm, please also try asking the ESR mailing list mentioned here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox.../faq/
I am sorry I could not further assist you on this issue.
