can not open private tab at all, how do i fix this

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Maybe you are in permanent Private Browsing mode. In permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History) all windows and tabs are PB mode tabs and the purple mask is hidden.

You can use an extension to get Private Browsing mode support per tab.
