Change from IE to Google Chrome for e-mail

When opening e-mails with attachments or links, my system uses Internet Explorer. I have serious problems because my computer freezes when I try to access them. I would like to use Google Chrome with Mozilla Thunderbird. How can I change the settings to use Google Chrome as the default for my e-mail?

There is only a single system default browser.

I haven't tested it myself, but the following article refers to a preference in Thunderbird's Config Editor that might let you send links to Chrome even if it is not your default browser:

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I decided to switch to Firefox as my default browser and it is working perfectly. Should have done that sooner! Lesson learned!
