How can I arrange my inbox so the newest e-mails are at the top?

As the -e-mail inbox is now, it shows the most recently received e-mails that have not been deleted at the bottom of the 40 or so displayed. Can I reverse the order so that the newest is at the top?

Click the 'Date' column in the thread pane until you get the desired sort order.
