can't maximize Thunderbird email screen to desktop

I find double clicking in the heading of the window between the tabs and the calendar icons maximizes the window.

Does pressing F8 modify this "taskbar" like turn it on and off. or is it the today pane that needs you to press the X beside the events and tasks heading.
