Updated via 'Avast Software Updater' (in Win7) . Found 'Privacy' refuses to open in Webpage, and suspect the antivirus(free) has manipulated?
I noticed ( on my wife's Fujitsu laptop Win7) after mistakenly 'updating' Thunderbird using the Avast(free) Software Updater , that the 'Privacy' link ( under the 'Help' Toolbar/ 'About Thunderbird' / ) failed to respond, whereas the other two links (Licensing Info & End User Rights ) worked fine. Went to my own desktop PC ( Win7 dual booted with Mint17) , and found that Thunderbird's 'Privacy' was working OK ......... similarly, on my Mint 18 version of Thunderbird (on a separate PC). I intend to copy my wife's 'Profile' / Uninstall Thunderbird / Download 'new' version Thunderbird / re-load 'copied' Profile . I am suspicious that Avast ( or some other PUP ) has tampered with the installation , consequently I felt that the community might like to be aware of the possibility ........... particularly with the recent 'privacy issues' concerning Avast & CCleaner / and the default privacy settings within the Avast Antivirus, that need switching off.

'updating' Thunderbird using the Avast(free) Software Updater
I think that's a bad idea. Either use the built-in updater via Help - About or get the full installer from https://www.thunderbird.net/

Thunderbird should pick up the existing profile after re-installing the application. Having said that, it is always a good idea to have a recent backup of the Thunderbird profile. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
