Hello,

The title is self-explanatory. How can I clear my awesome bar, so that websites that I have visited in the past do not show up anymore when I start typing in the adress bar ?

The following solutions have not worked: - clearing entire search history, cookies and cache - "Forget about this site" (since I have cleared everything, no site shows up in my Library. I cannot "forget" about these websites since they do not appear here) - unchecking "Browing history" in the adress bar suggestion preferences in the "Privacy & Security" options (it does prevent the websites from showing up, but it does not actually delete them from wherever they are saved, which is what I want to do) - deleting the places.sqlite file (this solution was mentionned on another thread about this issue, but I have not found this file in my Firefox folder) - Reinstalling Firefox (could work, but I would like to find a less extreme solution)

Thank you for any suggestion you could have to help me. Have a nice day!

The suggestions in the location bar drop-down list have changed and currently you do not only see website addresses you typed. I would assume that using "Forget About This Site" would remove these hidden history items. If that isn't the case then places.sqlite might be corrupted.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite (bookmarks and history) and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
in case errors are reported close and restart Firefox and retry

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:preferences page.

Note that Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so make sure to look in the correct location. Location used for the main profile that keeps your personal data in "AppData\Roaming" (Root Directory on about:profiles).

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files in "AppData\Local" (Local Directory on about:profiles).

  • ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/

One additional note: the addresses that Firefox shows inside the address bar itself -- not on the drop-down -- are from history, but sometimes seem to survive the clearing of history for mysterious reasons. To completely suppress that "in URL-bar autofill" feature, you can change a setting here:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.autoFill preference to switch the value from true to false

Thank you for your answer cor-el, I will try this and keep you posted on the results.

Thank you jscher2000, however it seems like your suggestion would only prevent the websites from showing up in the bar, and not actually delete them from wherever they are saved. It is interesting that the addresses mysteriously survive the clearing of history...
