A ping simply asks for a udp connection to a server and traces the time packets take to travel. It does not connect in log into the server. Nor does it utilize a "port" as mail protocols do. Using ping you have determined that the server is registered in DNS and UDP packets can get to it.
A web browser? is that wo a web mail system that is hosted on a web page which will be using standard HTTP/S protocols on standard web ports. That s actually not helpful at all. It is like saying my mobile does not connect to the internet but my land line does. Similar destinations but the route is nothing even vaguely similar.
So lets try some basics.
How far did you get in setting up the account? Does the mail server use IMAP or POP or will you be requiring an add-on to connect to something like exchange server?
Is the mail server on the same network as you or are you trying to connect from the internet to a local network device that you do not have permissions to access?
