In Options>Privacy&Security>"Ask to save logins and passwords for websites" the tick box clears to unticked every time I restart Firefox. This is new behavior.
Since the last Firefox update the tick box, which I want ticked, clears itself each time I start Firefox. I then have to go into Options to re-tick the box every session. There was a previous thread in which the reverse was the problem, but none of the plug-ins or add-ons listed there are installed on my PC

Do you have an external Password Manager like Roboform or "Trend Micro Password Manager" installed?
If you have the "Trend Micro Password Manager" installed then try to uninstall this application via the Windows Control Panel.
Thanks for your quick reply. No, I don't have Roboform or Trend Micro Password Manager. I don't have Trend Micro installed at all because it interferes with Malwarebytes, my preferred malware program. I have not deliberately installed any add-ons or plug-ins, even those in Firefox's recommended list. This problem seems to have arisen after the last Firefox update. Prior to that I had no problem. PS running Windows 10 with full updates. I have all of Malwarebytes protection systems turned on.
There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
You can check if you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts. The user.js file will only be present if you or other software has created this file and normally won't be present.
You can check its content with a text editor (right-click: "Open with"; do not double-click). The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
You can delete the user.js file if you didn't create this file yourself.
You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
- Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Directory:
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
I don't see a user.js file in that folder, but there is a Prefs.js file. Can that be deleted?
