I tried to Add a signature & got the above error message - have now removed the Sig rebooted PC but still can't send emails.

Have you asked your mail provider what the issue is that they are rejecting your mail. That message is from them, not Thunderbird. Thunderbird is just reporting the error it is given why it has to stop what it is doing.
