Thunderbird automatically marking my emails as read,

To ensure I remember to do important tasks I leave the message as unread until I am ready to work on it but on Saturday morning I logged in to discover that all my emails, including new unseen ones had been marked as read. I read the help and went and unticked the automatic mark as read box. Which seems to have stopped them showing as read immediately -but now it marks it as unread within a couple of minutes. Does anyone have any ideas as to what has happened ? and how I can resolve it. Thank you.

Do you access the account on other computers or devices? If it's an IMAP setup and a message is opened (read) on one device, it's marked as read on all devices.
