I recently had to restore my computer to factory setting and Firefox was one of the first things I reinstalled when I was done. Everything seems to be working except that when I put my cursor over a tab or an extension button instead of a tool tip it just shows and empty box. It's always showed a tool tip so I don't know why it started doing this now.

Try running Firefox in Safe Mode and see if the problem persists.
