can't download emails from email server

I have the most recent version of thunderbird and win10. After a lot of phonecalls I got email settings for my account and I have a problem I get a message saying thunderbird is connecting to the server and a round circle on the tab. Nothing was downloaded even though I have messages in the email server.

Which TB version exactly? Did this work before, or did you just set up the account in Thunderbird the first time?
