I have used Tb with imap settings for years and never encountered any problems. But it's a while now that Tb keeps downloading same mails over and over. Tried to live with it but it slows down the pc in the very moment it's downloading p.e. 1500 mails. So reinstalled Tb, recreated a new profile for all mail accounts. Worked for a month maybe, and now it started again. Some mails get corrupted also, as on the webmail they are readible and on Tb they are messed up. Tried compact, ecc. but that's not working. Using windows defender with standard settings ? Any suggestions

It's quite possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting mail files. These are some generic suggestions to avoid problems with anti-virus software.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_how-to-find-your-profile

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

Thanks Christ1, will give it a try.

But the main backside is that a virusscanner is rather important for incoming e-mails ??

Most the time I when this happens I have to log into the mail server. If your mail host has a web mail box log into it and delete the trublesome email.

Actually, it's not. https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com/2017/01/anti-virus-again.html
