Organise bookmarks does not work

My problem is with the 'organise bookmarks' screen. When the screen opens all I have in the left column is the heading 'All Bookmarks' and nothing else, clicking on this heading does nothing. In the main screen area there are just 3 web addresses all have 'null' at the end. It's as though 'Organise Bookmarks' is not looking at the right file (sorry I'm not really into the workings of Firefox! Finally just to say the my bookmarks in general are working OK (all 368 of them) it;s just I can't organise them. Any help would be very much appreciated.

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

When you double click All Bookmarks, does anything at all appear below it?

Also, are any bookmark-related errors listed in Tools->Error Console?

No, nothing appears below when I double click

No reference to bookmarks in errors console
