When I ctrl+right click on a tab header, there appears "(*)" before the title of the tab header. I don't see any change in the behavior or properties of the header. What's happend? What does it mean?

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

That is not a built-in feature of Firefox, but is part of the Tab Mix plus add-on.

What it means is the tab has been selected for merging.

To see what it does have 2 Firefox windows open, in one of them open several tabs then select a few of them so that they have "(*)" displayed in the tab. Now use the Tab Mix Plus merge window option, the selected tabs will be merged with the other Firefox window, and the unselected tabs will just be closed.
