My Gmail message drafts are (temporarily) underscored by red wavy lines – Goggle says these are inserted by the browser and not by Gmail. How can I stop this?

Is it the spelling checker? Try disabling it: Options > Advanced > Check my spelling

That is the build-in Firefox spell checker.
Only words with errors should be underlined.
