Tabs won't go away

When I start up Firefox it has multiple tabs already open of pages I was browsing last week. I did not click save and close. But just in case I had I closed down all the tabs so 1 tab is google search and the second tab is empty. I close and click save and close. Reopen firefox and the original 7 tabs are there again. I cannot get rid of this.

I found the problem and wanted to share since others have had this problem. When you set your homepage it doesn't just set the currently active tab. It sets every tab so when you open firefox it opens every tab that was open when you set it.
