when my volume applet is open (habit) in vista it crashes when I close firefox

I use windows vista and have the habit of keeping my volume applet open as I always wear headphones and I'm always watching media. when I close firefox (now that I updated to 8.0) it crashes the volume applet. Trivial but annoying.
