firefox no longer opens a tab/window from a hot link

At some point firefox stopped opening tabs/windows from hot links. I can still right click and open a new tab but the direct action say from a google search will not work.

In past threads this was identified as a negative side effect of the Ask toolbar, although there could be other causes.

If you check here you might be able to disable or remove it:

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions

Partial luck...I do not have ASK toolbar but when I disable Extensions (All), clicking on a hotlink will take me to that site but NOT in a new tab as the settings say it should be...after some testing HTTPS: Everywhere was the culprit...however, still will not open selections in a new tab or window...soooo...partial....
