Recently (I can't remember when it happened in detail) some Facebook actions seem to have stopped working. In particular:

1) Clicking on the down-arrow icon to the right of "Home" no longer gives the drop-down box, but goes to my account setting page.

2) Clicking on the icons to the right of "facebook" does nothing - it used to get me to the various notifications.

3) Clicking on the "Chat" icon at the bottom does nothing.

All of these things work fine in IE, so it has to be a Facebook problem. I've tried clearing the caches and disabling plugins with no effect.

A Firefox Reset shouldn't cause you to love your bookmarks and personal information. Also, plugins should all be there (plugins are things like Flash, Java, etc). Reset does remove your extensions as many Firefox problems are the result of a poorly built extension.

So, you upgraded to Firefox 14, and reset Firefox, and there is no change?

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. When I go to the troubleshooting info I don't seem to have a "reset Firefox" button. The only useful button I can find copies the info to the clipboard. There's also the button to display the profile directory. And I can't see a "reset Firefox" anywhere else.

Ah sorry, you need to update to Firefox 14.0.1. You should do that immediately to stay secure anyway. Update Firefox to the latest release. Update, then go ahead, if Facebook still doesn't work, reset Firefox.

Well, I upgraded and no change. So I reset Firefox, lost all my useful information, plugins, extensions and personal settings. No change.

But now I've a mega-hassle to get back to where I was. What's needed is a "save config" and "restore config".

Well, various plugins were disabled (but easy to restore). And my personal screen layout was changed. I didn't lose bookmarks (nor even love them!) thank heavens.

After the upgrade nothing changed. But now I've rebooted the Facebook page is now working OK again. Maybe I should have rebooted a couple of times before resetting. So that part's happy.

I think the best ting to do is to save the current config to a text file, run a diff between that file and the one I saved earlier and work out the differences.

Found one major problem after the reset - as it removed NoScript I had to reinstall it, and ALL of my carefully organised options have disappeared. This will take ages to restore as I didn't have a copy of them (unless someone knows how to restore them from my file backups - I'll try googling for help here)

Note that a "Reset" creates a new profile and tries to import some settings from the old profile leaving the old profile intact, including the cache folder (about:cache) that can take up to 1 GB.
